Apart from the weekly training program, sea cadets know how to have fun!
Several times a year we have on-board weekends where we take the whole corps to an
off site training area where we practice our seamanship and leadership skills plenty
of time for camp fires, canoing and hiking.
We also partake in Citizenship tours such as museum tours and visits to navy ships in port.
There are plenty of opportunities for cadets to become involved in our competition teams:
Sailing is taught at the Jericho Sail Training Centre in Vancouver. The sail school uses the 3.6m Echo sail boats to teach the CanSail I & II sail training programme. Some cadets take advanced sail training in summer camp and go on to teach sailing at the corps level. Sea cadets enter local and sea cadet programme competitions. Winning teams go on to race against other sea cadets at the provincial and national level.
RCSCC Invincible has a trained Range Safety Officer (RSO) and we conduct, as part of the mandatory training programme, training in safe and effective marksmanship using the Daisy Air Rifle – which is not rated as a firearm. The marksmanship program has been specifically designed for youth and is based on Olympic-style competition. Sea cadets compete in tri-service matches at the area, regional, and national level. Firearm safety is given the highest priority throughout this training.
Orienteering is a family of sports that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain, and normally moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. Invincible teams participate in regional orienteering competitions.
Sea Cadet music training is based upon the Royal Conservatory of Music standards and we have experienced staff giving free music instruction. The Invincible band has competed for the past two years in the regional cadet band competition. This year the band won a silver award, taking second place in the micro band category. Cadets can take music training at summer camp for all levels, from absolute beginner to advanced player.
Invincible will be starting up a first aid team in the fall and will be competing in local competitions. First aid teams are trained to the St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid level.
The aim of drill and ceremonial is to contribute to efficiency
and to maintain a high degree of personal excellence. Drill promotes
discipline, alertness, precision, pride, steadiness and the cohesion necessary
for success. Drill is teamwork. Cadets participate in drill competitions with other lower mainland cadet corps.
Sea cadets learn all aspects of seamanship from tying knots, splicing rope, applying whippings, using blocks and tackles to rigging sheer legs. Working safely in a naval environment is emphasized. Cadets compete in flotilla seamanship competitions.
