Navy League Branch

The Navy League of Canada

The Navy League of Canada was established in 1923 as a Naval Volunteer Reserve. It’s primary purpose was to provide financial assistance, hostels, clothing, and amenities for visiting seamen as well as to members of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Merchant Navy. In 1942 with the creation of the Sea Cadets, the Navy  League turned their primary objective to support this youth training program.

Partnership with Sea Cadets

Royal Canadian Sea Cadets is a unique partnership between the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Navy League of Canada (NL). Each Corps is sponsored by a local Navy League Branch. The Branch is comprised of civilian volunteers (often parents) who have various duties such as administration, fundraising, assisting in the operation of the Corps, securing facilities for training, assisting in finding suitable adults to act as officer and civilian instructors and assisting in the recruitment of cadets. The Branch’s funds make possible supplemental optional activities

and programs not funded by the Department of National Defence. While cadets encourage a familiarity with the Canadian Armed Forces, Sea Cadet Corps do not have a recruiting function and there is no obligation to join the Canadian Forces.

Fundraising and Activity Fees

Fundraising is an integral part of the success of our Corps. Funds are  raised through a variety of activities ranging from Tag days, Bottle Drives, Baking goods sales, and a Pub night. These funds supplement expenses from cross country and international trips, new equipment and boat repair, food for special events, sailing and canoe training courses, band instruments, bus transport to special events, parades, and much more! Every dollar raised by the Maple Ridge Navy League Branch ensures that our Cadets will have the appropriate equipment to enhance their Cadet experiences. Activity fees are a fee set in place by the Branch Executive and must be paid at the beginning of the Training season (September). This will ensure that funds are available to the Corps fall activities.

How can Parents Help

As a Parent or Guardian, you can do a great deal to help your son or daughter become successful in the Sea Cadet Program. The most important thing is to show an interest in their success and training and to support them during the year. Participating and helping out in the programs or the Fundraising events, or becoming a member of Navy League Executive are just some of the many ways you can share this experience with your child. Come onboard and Get Involved!
