Summer Training

Every year Sea Cadets from all across Canada apply for summer training. There are numerous courses that are run and are provided at no charge. Cadets taking courses are paid a $60 training bonus per week to attend. Each course is specialized to allow the cadets to reach certain goals.

HMCS Quadra 1

Courses available at HMCS Quadra in Comox, BC include:

  • General Training (2 weeks)
  • Basic Sail; Seamanship; Musician; and Drill & Ceremonial (3 weeks)
  • Intermediate Sail; Musician; Ship’s Boat Operator (6 weeks)
  • Sail Instructor; Boatswain’s Mate; and Advanced Musician (6 weeks)

In addition, some courses are shared with Army or Air cadets and are offered at other training camps:

  • Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor (6 weeks at the Vernon Army Cadet Camp)
  • Fitness and Sports Instructor (6 weeks at the Cold Lake Summer Training Centre at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta)

Many Invincible Cadets apply to become paid staff Cadets at HMCS Quadra.  A staff Cadet must be 16 years of age prior to the summer course and have achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd class or higher. Staff cadets can find themselves involved in the full instruction and supervision of younger Cadets attending the camp; or roles from administrative to logistical support duties.  Pay scales depend on the position.
